With each tower that Matthew produces, there are some obvious buildings and places of interest that have to be included. York Minster in York, the Spa in Harrogate and Fountains Abbey in the Dales to name but a few. When Matthew started on this mission, he always wanted to go deeper than that, he wanted to include something for the tourists to use as guides, he also wanted to show the locals that he’d really researched the areas in the drawings.
It’s not just the buildings though, it’s the special little places that some wouldn’t even be aware of, a little outcrop of trees, places that possibly only the locals would know about. Matthew started out producing limited edition prints but soon it became clear that he couldn’t keep up with command. He doesn’t do limited editions anymore but he does occasionally return to previously visited towers, producing the ‘Back To The Tower’ series. While some corners of a town never change, there are always new little places opening up and these revisit towers reflect that. While the towers occupy most of Matthew’s time, he also produces other pieces, including the Fox series. Inspired by fox hunting, they show a hunting scene while the hiding fox is hidden within the landscape.
